North Dakota Fishing & Hunting Reports
It seems to be that time of the year when more paddlefish than paddlefishermen show up for snagging! While we were thinking that the big rush would be here for the Friday and Saturday catch and keep days this past weekend, we were wrong. Whether it was the cool weather or the fear of a short season we did not have a big crowd show up. Regardless of the low turnout on Friday May 9 they harvested 80 fish with a 112# fish in the mix. Saturday they harvest 95 fish for a season total of 582 fish. It does not appear that season will close anytime soon as the fishermen numbers will probably be quite low from here on out. One thing that could change that is that Montana opens the paddlefishing on the Yellowstone on Thursday the 15th and maybe that will encourage the fishermen to give North Dakota another try. The river was up again this weekend but is once again dropping and could continue to do so if it stays dry. The mountain snowpack could hold off for a while if the weather does not warm up. It has been a high water year and the fishermen have had a little harder time than usual, like always some guys know how to tip the odds in their favor! The hot weekend for fish and fishermen was the 2nd & 3rd when one hundred and four fish came in on Friday and one hundred and seventy one on Saturday. Lots of males were still being caught this weekend at Sundheim Park and the Stateline. You know that the males are always running ahead of the big girls! If you still have a tag get out and enjoy it just a little more as it will be a whole year till season will open again for the “BATTLE FOR THE PADDLE”!
